Wrestling removed from 2020 Olympics

Stephen Wilson of the Associated Press is reporting that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made the shock decision to drop wrestling from the 2020 Olympics. The IOC dropped wrestling rather than the Modern Pentathlon, the sport most had expected to be dropped.

Wrestling will be able to apply for inclusion in 2020. It will be competing against a combined bid from baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu for a single opening in the 2020 games.

The modern pentathlon combines fencing, horse riding, swimming, running and shooting. It was created early in the 20th Century and intended to test the athletic skills needed by a calvary officer at that time.

"This is a process of renewing and renovating the program for the Olympics," IOC spokesman Mark Adams told the AP. "In the view of the executive board, this was the best program for the Olympic Games in 2020. It's not a case of what's wrong with wrestling, it is what's right with the 25 core sports."

This is a shocking, and potentially devastating, blow to the sport of wrestling, widely regarded as the most ancient sport of human beings and part of the Olympics, both ancient and modern since the beginning.

Rugby and Golf are in for the next Olympics in 2016. Wrestling was voted out from a final group that also included modern pentathlon, taekwondo and field hockey. How the hell did these stay in but wrestling is out. This is completely disgusting.

The sports that are being considered to replace wrestling are: a combined bid from baseball and softball, plus karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu. They will be vying for a single opening in 2020.

They were considering getting rid of hockey? That is weird. Hockey and wrestling should be staples of the games.

Ice Hockey is a niche version of Hockey, it's offspring.

The oldest sport in the world and one that's been at every olympics. Awful decision to get rid of it.

that is the opposite of going mainstream.

cricket is maistream where we come from but essentially is only played to any kind of standard by commonwealth countries. rugby 7's is the same (it's 7 a side, not 15 a side the IOC are considering).

golf is global but i'm not sure it's a sport that represents the olympic spirit.

maybe, but the olympics are supposed to represent amateurism.

rugby 7's is gaining in popularity and was a success at the commonwealth games but bringing in cricket makes no sense at all. there are only 8 nations that play a good enough standard of cricket and the west indies wouldn't be able to compete without special dispensation because those countries all compete individually in the olympics
