- WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28KOs), and his adviser Sampson Lewkowicz, have confirmed that WBA interim-beltholder Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11KOs) will be the opponent on April 27th in Argentina. HBO will televise.
Martinez, in his second reign as WBC champion, will make the first defense of the title he captured from Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on September 15th in Las Vegas. Murray, who fought to controversial draw with Felix Sturm last December, easily dispatched previously unbeaten Jorge Navarro on November 24th.
The two potential stadium venues include Monumental de River and Estadio Único de La Plata. Martinez wants to have at least 40,000 or more fans in attendence. He made a personal promise to Cristina Kirchner, the President of Argentina, to put on a five star performance.
"Martin Murray is a very tough opponent. Nobody has ever beaten him. He is not scared to fight Martinez in Argentina. He went to Germany to fight Felix Sturm to a draw, but everybody thought Murray won the fight. He is not an easy opponent, but Martinez did not want an easy opponent for his first defense in Argentina," Lewkowicz told BoxingScene.com. http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=59882 |
