That is a gnarly cut, isn't it? Hope you've already digested your lunch, Maniacs.
During today's (March 31, 2012) One FC 3: "War of Lions" event in Singapore, Melvin Manhoef was getting the better of his opponent, Yoshiyuki Nakanishi, using a mixture of kicks, to the head, the body and the legs. The deadly Dutch striker was doing quite well for himself and looked well on his way to an impressive victory.
Until the referee called a stop to the proceedings so the cageside doctor could check on a cut that had opened on Manhoef's leg. It didn't take long to make the decision to call a stop to the contest.
Here's how our very own Kevin Haggerty described it in the live blog:
Just over three minutes to go and so far Manhoef seems to have the advantage in the stand up. The fight has not hit the canvas just yet. Good body kick from Nakanishi. The referee has called time. Manhoef has a seriously bad cut on his shin. Somehow, he split his shin wide open during one of his kicks. Blood is spewing everywhere. The doctor is checking him out and they may have to stop this. They're stopping the fight. What a shame and an unfortunate way for this fight to end, but the injury is atrocious. It's one of the worst lacerations I've ever seen.
That is indeed a horrific cut. And a tough break for Manhoef, who entered the fight on a three-fight losing streak and having lost five of his last seven bouts.
When it rains, it pours.
