Melendez vs. Masvidal nets 460,000 viewers

Despite a strong combat sports lead-in with the finals of the Super Six
Wold Boxing Classic, this past weekend's "Strikeforce: Melendez vs.
Masvidal" event drew just 460,000 Showtime viewers.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed the figures from an industry source.

The figure serves as just the sixth-highest mark of Strikeforce's eight "Arena Series" events to air on Showtime in 2011.

"Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal," which featured a lightweight title
fight between Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez and challenger
Jorge Masvidal, took place Dec. 17 at San Diego's Valley View Casino
Center. The card also saw female featherweight champion Cristiane
"Cyborg" Santos earn a 16-second TKO win over Hiroko Yamanaka.

The household rating figure for the event was 1.35

Strikeforce's eight 2011 "Arena Series" events drew an average audience
size of 521,375 viewers to Showtime. The "Challengers Series" events
generally drew considerably less.

The promotion returns to Showtime on Jan. 7 for "Strikeforce: Rockhold
vs. Jardine." The fight card takes place during a "free preview
weekend," so even non-subscribers of the premium cable channel will be
able to watch Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold take on
UFC vet Keith Jardine.

The complete list of viewership totals for Strikeforce's 2011 "Arena Series" events includes:

We did have America's team playing on the same night but that was over before the real action started. But we didn't have any college football that night to take away viewers. Also it had a nice lead in boxing card.

This shows that even when the brand is considered weak it can still pull close to its prior average numbers. Melendez's rising star helps this card no doubt, but he can't fight every card, and unless Strikeforce brings him legit challengers to his title out of the UFC's deep contender well, he won't be there very long. The focus should be on crowning future champions. I don't know how many Luke Rockholds there are right now waiting to emerge at this second, but if you look at the history of the WEC(and obviously the UFC), Zuffa's scouting system produces quality rosters and compelling champions. With the ridiculous challenger series dropped and only having 8 or 10 events a year, Strikeforce cards are going to be awesome as time goes by.

The total disclosed payroll for the Dec. 17 event was $580,000.

Now, the usual disclaimer: The figures do not include deductions for
items such as insurance, licenses and taxes. Additionally, the figures
do not include money paid by sponsors, which can oftentimes be a
substantial portion of a fighter's income. They also do not include any
other "locker room" or special bonuses Zuffa, LLC oftentimes pays.

Considering the grand prix #'s I have to believe showtime is very happy with the ratings.

The California State Athletic Commission released the numbers for the entire show Tuesday and MMA Fighting reported on them, revealing a paltry attendance of 2995 and a final gate at $154,075.

There is still this undercurrent of idiocy in the MMA fandom that is set against Strikeforce for whatever reason. You smell some of it here, a lot of it in the now unreadable bloodyelbow(god damn do their writers suck anymore....)
