Real Pro Wrestling was pro wrestling, but it was real.
Guys like Cormier, Lawal, Woodley, Larkin and Warren had time there.

I'm not really sure there is much video of it, I have not seen it. It would be more known in armature wrestling circles I'd imagine, collegiate/national level.
Real Pro Wrestling (also known as RPW) is a concept announced in March 2005 for a new professional league of sport wrestling, similar to the amateur wrestling found in the Olympic Games and at the college and high school level. The term "Real" is meant to emphasize that it is professional (meaning the wrestlers are paid money) and it is wrestling, but that it is not professional wrestling in the traditional sense, which features predetermined outcomes and operates under a very different set of rules from amateur wrestling.

You called it OU! It was too gimmicky, which, imo, is part of why even the wrestling community in the US never really took to it that much. It was a cool concept, just not executed well.

Did they try too hard with ring entrances and trash talk and not focus on actual sporting competition?

Exactly. They tried to make it similar to WWE, but still real wrestling, with a team concept. They would have beaming lights and a lot of stupid gimmicks to try to appeal to people outside the wrestling community, but ultimately, I think they alienated the wrestling community with the gimmicks and didnt pick up any other fans because wrestling is not that popular in the US. I think if they relaunched the league with less gimmicks, given the rise in popularity of mma and the UFC in the US, they would have more success.

Yeah I figured that would be the issues. Focusing more on the entertainment and not focusing the skill and caliber of athletes involved in a legit sporting competition. I think you are right, people are more aware of technique now with the rise of MMA and they might have an easier time selling the sport today.
