Fan falls out of stands at Rangers game

ARLINGTON, Texas

The Texas Rangers say a fan died after falling out of the stands while trying to catch a baseball tossed his way during the game.

Rangers president Nolan Ryan said after Thursday night's game that the team was "deeply saddened" to learn that the man "has passed away as a result of this tragic accident."

The Rangers did not identify the man; they said he fell about 20 feet.

The fan fell head-first and landed behind a 14-foot-high wall supporting a video board that shows replays and scores from other games.

The accident happened in the second inning after Oakland's Conor Jackson hit a foul ball that ricocheted into left field. Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton retrieved the ball and tossed it into the stands.

Replays on Oakland's television broadcast show the man reaching for the ball and apparently catching it before tumbling.

MLB needs to reevaluate the safety of their ballparks. If people are going to be reaching for balls, there needs to be a safety net or something below.

Yeah I have been at comerica and have seen similar things where thank god now 1 has actually fell but they are leaning over a rail way to far.

Make it a policy to where if you're suspected of going into the net on purpose the ball cannot leave in your possession, you're kicked the fuck out of the game, and banned from coming back for the season or maybe longer. I am sure some people will still be stupid, but at least they won't be killed in front of their little kid in his baseball glove in hand. I would rather deal with an occasional dumbdick in a net than a fatality if I owned a ball team or was Bug Selig

Accidents happen Wolf. At some point people have to be responsible for there actions.

Yo Tim I appreciate the focus on personal responsibility but let's keep this in perspective. The guy was simply leaning out for a ball thrown his way by a star player. I think dying gets in the way of "taking responsibility at some point". People should "take responsibility" but so must owners and baseball itself. If you run a business where sometimes people get killed enjoying your product, by accident and even if it is their poor choices as much as anything that lead to the death, changes must be explored to address it if possible. And here they are. Either we can make it so ball players can't throw balls into the stands and people aren't allowed to chase fouls by the railing and aren't allowed to have gloves, or we increase park safety so a guy who reaches out for the ball doesn't fall to his death if an accident happens. Even if it is the "fault" of the person who died, it is no different than auto makers making the cars that will be involved in vehicle crashes safer, even if most all accidents are the fault of the motorists. Two patrons were killed so far this season and another injured in the same stadium last year. That isn't acceptable. Something needs done to prevent people who lean over railings from falling to their death, or we need to kick out people who lean over railings immediately. A change in policy on some level has to come.

sad event, i think it will be a problem with Hamilton honestly, I mean were talking about a guy who isnt allowed to be alone by himself or carry money by himself. He also thinks the reason he is in a slump in day games is because he has blue eyes. This could affect him big time, cant really blame him if it does.

Somebody needs to edit this thread title because I always forget about it and it makes me laugh everytime I see it which in turn makes me feel like an asshole
