No more Gus

On Thursday afternoon, Sports Illustrated is reporting that CBS college basketball and NFL broadcaster Gus Johnson will leave the network after the two parties could not agree on a new deal. SI's Richard Deitsch also reports that Johnson is a possible candidate to call college football games for Fox.

Industry sources said Johnson has spoken with Fox Sports about a role in its college football coverage. Fox Sports (which has a 49 percent ownership share in the Big Ten Network) recently upped its inventory of college football as part of the 12-year, $3 billion contract between the Pac-10 (soon to be the Pac-12) and ESPN and Fox.

According to the report, Johnson had been considered for a play-by-play position on NFL Network, which announced Thursday that ESPN's Brad Nessler had been hired to fill the role.

I always found Gus to be pretty annoying, no matter what sport. But it will be strange to have a NCAA tourney with no Gus.

Good news to some, bad news to others - Gus Johnson is likely staying in the MMA game. MMAFighting is reporting that Johnson has signed a deal with Fox Sports, but his Showtime combat sports deal was completely separate from his CBS deal:

"Last week it was revealed that Gus Johnson's contract with CBS had
expired, and on Tuesday morning it was reported that Johnson has
accepted a job at Fox. But that doesn't mean he's done as the voice of
mixed martial arts on Showtime, the sister network of CBS.

Sources told MMAFighting.com that Johnson's contract with CBS was for
basketball and football, and that his deal to call fights (both MMA and
boxing) for Showtime was a separate contract. That contract is still in
effect, and Johnson will call Saturday night's Andre Ward-Arthur
Abraham boxing match for Showtime. Although Showtime hasn't yet
announced who will broadcast its next MMA show (a June 18 Strikeforce
card), Johnson is expected to call that event as well."

I always like Gus , he was like the younger, happier, sober version of Larry Merchant, minus all the shit talking......ok so hes nothing like Larry, I have no clue why I like him.

Not a fan of Gus calling MMA.

I really don't even think he's that bad. He tries to make it too exciting sometimes but that Showtime team sucks in general besides for Pat as the analysis guy

Gus is OK at MMA. Needed to learn the sport a bit more, and tone down the act a bit, but I thought he had promise.

I do think he calls a much better boxing match. pretty good in that regard imo.

Gus gets way too much hate from both boxing and MMA fans, I'll take his over excitement over Mauro's ramblings any day of the week.
