UFC welterweight Georges St. Pierre is set to headline UFC 129 in front of the biggest crowd (55,000) in UFC history in Toronto, Canada on April 30th. He'll be facing Jake Shields, the former EliteXC and Strikeforce champ who's returned to his natural 170lb fighting weight in the UFC. GSP spoke to the UFC's cameras about the fight:
"Jake Shields hasn't lost in six years. He has won 15 fights in a row. But he hasn't fought me. The UFC world title is a different game."
"He's the guy that I've wanted to fight for a long time. I think he's the greatest fighter at welterweight now, he's the guy to beat. The best guys are going to clash together that night and it's going to be a good fight."
"Jake Shields is the best jiu-jitsu guy in the UFC right now. I know what he wants to do to me. He's going to want to set up his takedown with striking, put me down, mount me and try to submit me from there."
"He doesn't know what I'm going to do to him. I can try to knock him out standing up or knock him out on the floor or try to submit him. I'm not afraid to go on the floor with him and that is something different that he never faced before. Everyone that he ever fought, they were afraid to go on the floor with him but not me."
"I'm a clever fighter. I will dictate the pace of the fight, I will fight my fight and this fight will finish with still UFC Welterweight Champion Georges "Rush" St. Pierre."
"GSP is going to make Jake Shields look like a girl. It ain't going to go five rounds. No way, no possible way. I'll put the house on that, that's easy. That's the easiest bet you could ever make. Watch, mark my words, he won't make it out of round three."

Of course he's not, GSP wins this fight no matter where it goes.

I don't know about that. Jake has the better ground game.

I just cant see Shields taking GSP down. I think GSP dominates on the feet for the first two rounds, then decides to take Shields down and pound on him from top. Shields is a beast on the ground, but mostly from top position. GSP all the way in this fight.

He took down and dominated hendo for five rounds, but struggled getting kamp to the ground. I don't know what to think about Jake. Can't wait to see it.

The way I rationalize what happened in the Hendo fight is a combination of things. First, I think Hendo's claim of problems cutting weight were probably true. He looked like he put everything into ko'ing Shields in the first round, and had nothing left after that. Second, I have never thought Hendo had the greatest defense to leg attacks, as he was very successful in Greco, but never an all american in college wrestling. Shields, many forget, was a college wrestler (never an all american, but still a good wrestler) and posesses decent leg attacks. I think all these factors contributed to what we saw. I just dont see the leg attacks that Shields brings being able to put GSP down. Too athletic, wont gas, and his hips are ridiculous.

You can either look at those two fights as a combination of Hendo's back injury and Jake cutting all that weight.

"I’m a mixed martial artist. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is my favorite sport, so I want to become better at it, and especially for this fight. I’m fighting an expert in grappling, so I want to be able to use Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to come for a submission. Jake Shields calls his grappling American Jiu-Jitsu, because he doesn’t train with the gi. Me, I want to know American Jiu-Jitsu, but I’m using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I’m training with the best on the sport right now. I believe [training with the gi] makes your game more technical, and I believe it’s very important."
Brings up the interesting debate of what is better for MMA training? Gi or no gi? Talked about it with primetime a little bit after watching Eddie Bravo on Fighting Words.
