The “Headhunter” will try to sniper the “Polar Bear,” as UFC veteran Paul Buentello has signed to face Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad in a super fight at Bellator 42 on April 23.

The promotion announced the non-title fight in a press release on Monday.

Konrad, a former NCAA champion in wrestling, comes in with an unblemished 7-0 record after working his way through the last Bellator heavyweight tournament to become champion.

This will be Konrad’s first fight since defeating British fighter Neil Grove last October to win the Bellator strap.

“I’m not taking Paul Buentello lightly for one moment,” said Konrad. “I feel like this fight with Paul is going to be the toughest fight of my career, and that’s exactly how I’m preparing for it. Just because he’s a little older doesn’t mean he’s not dangerous. He has a ton of experience, and that definitely works to his advantage.”

Paul Buentello enters the Bellator cage for the first time after a veteran career in several different promotions including the UFC and Strikeforce. Buentello’s last fight was a win over former “Ultimate Fighter” competitor Kerry Schall in the disastrous Dominican Republic show that took place last December.

Buentello and many of the other fighters on the card never received pay, but he did get the win on his official record. Now he steps up against one of the best wrestlers in MMA, looking to stop the takedown and land the knockout shot.

“With a nickname like ‘The Headhunter,’ most of my opponents know that I’m looking to stand and bang,” said Buentello. “I’m definitely expecting for Cole Konrad to try to get me to the ground as soon as possible. I have to pull the trigger in this fight. I got into this sport making a name for myself for putting my hands on my opponent’s faces, and I definitely want to get back to my roots in this fight. I plan on standing my ground and putting my hands on Cole.”

The bout between Konrad and Buentello will cap off Bellator 42, which takes place on April 23 in Oklahoma and airs live on MTV 2.

at least the Headhunter gets another payday

Decent step up in class for Konrad.

Not sure why non-Title fight, but favorable matchup for Konrad, Paul doesn't have the takedown D for this fight.

yeah same here, he'll probably wear Paul out to a point where slaps should be able to put him out...

yeah thats what it seems like...

only time the belt is on the line is vs the tourney winner. all other fights involving the champ are non title super fights.

I'd say lame, except, Konrad's fights tend to be blandsville anyway. Hopefully they have a solid fight on the undercard which they can move up to the main.
