| This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of in my life.
When I moved to the suburbs, we had maybe 30 black kids in our high school of 800 students...and none of them took offense to the word "nigger" being in a 100+ year old book.
It is part of this country's history, and it shouldnt be black-balled from everyone's memory just because a few people are too stupid to rationalize shit. If a 6th grader is incapable of rationalizing that "nigger" is a bad word from the past, and that black people were slaves hundreds of years ago, and that things are alot better now than they were between the two races...then maybe said 6th grader needs to be held back for a few years...that OR dont allow middle schoolers to read the book without permission.
Very easy fix. Changing a published book that has a lot of history to it is stupid. 'Nuff said.

| a more appropriate course of action would be not giving the books to dumb little kids who can't rationalize the material than changing a classic that has been around for over a century with no problems. If the usage of niggerniggernigger is too inappropriate for little kids, then it's an adult book and should remain the same. | |

| First off, only an ignorant black person is offended by the word nigger. You know why? Because the word is nearly 3,000 years old and is derived from the Latin (Roman) word niger (when pronouncing it roll the 'r' like a Latino). Guess what it means? Black or dark. That is where the country Nigeria gets its' name. Also the Niger river does too.
As for Injun? It is a bastardized hand-me-down reference to Indians living in Cajun territory, who had adopted the lifestyle of the Norman-Saxon descendants from Canada and the Mississippi. Which shockingly the stories take place on the latter.
So how about educating our kids instead of sheltering them from their own heritage? covering their eyes from the reality actually causes more trouble than fixes anything.
And if someone can please explain to me how changing half-breed to half-blood is less offensive or is even actually offensive, considering the President of the United States referred to himself as a mutt, I would be very appreciative for the education. | |
