Im just saying I wish it was equal for everyone because I need the money too, im only pullin down about $10-12k a year right now and im living on my own (with 3 roomates), buying my own clothes, food, phone bill, internet, and gas. Not to mention the car I bought, the insurance on it and trying to pay for books and tuition.
I should get some sort of financial aid but got denied for it. I feel like, maybe if I were a minority I'd be getting alot more financial aid if I were in the same situation and it makes my blood boil because I really could use the money. You need to emancipate yourself from your parents if that is the case. If you are truly supporting yourself without any help from them, and are still in school, only emancipation will get you financial aid. As of now, if your parents are co-signing loans and putting you down as a dependent on their tax returns, to the government, you are supported by them, so their income is looked at when you are applying for financial aid. I'm not taking out loans though, luckily the school I currently go to is fairly cheap now that they lowered the prices somewhat because of the economy.
But yes, im pretty sure they still had me listed as dependent for this year, though i was not. And are you talking about emancipation, as in marriage? No, you can legally emacipate yourself from your parents if they refuse to stop listing you as a dependent. That way, you would file your own tax returns and based on your income, would be eligible for various things, which you aren't eligible for now since your parents income is listed on the financial aid applications, as for tax purposes, you are a dependent (despite you actually being independent).

| Capt Organic can just call posts dumb without even really giving reasons. Noregret owned him pretty good here.
Affirmative action is a tough nut for me to crack. On the one hand, it's "racist" in of itself, but on the other hand, it does represent some "get back" for people that do face discrimination, and also come from sub cultures where education and success nearly aren't as expected, or even accepted.
Blacks were actively kept from education throughout slavery, reconstruction and all the way to Brown vs Board in many parts of the nation and thus their still developing culture doesn't place a lot of emphasis on success, the vast majority of all black's grandparents never went to college for instance, so extra tools to help them along I am more and more fine with. This is why the white simple minded mentality "just get a job and go to school like the rest of us" doesn't carry a lot of intellectual weight. Who is "us" to them?
However affirmative action also in a way represents a continuation of the culture of subservience and handouts that was created before the civil rights movement. The idea that blacks are a weaker, lesser group and should be supported because they can't make it on their own. It's also one of the many tools the American left consciously or not, uses to keep blacks down, poor and voting democrat. Feed the proletariat and then keep them hungry and they'll keep voting for you won't they?
