Gonzaga cut following loss

Once a promising No. 1 contender, Brazilian heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga has been cut from the UFC following his recent loss at UFC 121.

The fighter announced the news on his Twitter page.

The 31-year-old made a big splash in the early part of his UFC career, winning four straight, including a memorable head kick knockout over Mirko Cro Cop that vaulted him into a championship match against Randy Couture.

Gonzaga (11-6) lost that UFC 74 title bout via third-round TKO, and he never recovered the momentum that he once had. Including that Couture loss, he's just 3-5 in his last eight fights, with wins over Justin McCully, Josh Hendricks and Chris Tuchscherer. But Gonzaga had trouble with elite fighters, dropping bouts to Fabricio Werdum, Shane Carwin and Junior Dos Santos, all via KO or TKO.

At UFC 121, he took on Brendan Schaub, but fell short in a three-round decision loss.

"Thanks for all your support," Gonzaga wrote in his tweet. "Back to normal life and BJJ forever."

man, i dont agree with this cut.

The UFC used his name to help build up other up and comers. He will forever be remembered because of the CC head kick. Bellator should jump all over it.

He would be a tough fight for Cole

jds steals everyones killer instinct once he gets done with them.

Is it Me or does it seem like he doesn't even want to keep fighting?

When GG shows up in real shape and ready to really fight, I will be impressed. He got lucky and KOd CC with the head kick, which kept him around, while he continued to fuck up fights he should have won or competed in. Screw him.

I have also been a huge Gabe fan but he has underperformed by far. He was always very talented he just never put it all together. I am not surprised at all by this cut.

Lost 3 of his last 4, 5 of his last 8. KO'd in 4 of those fights.

Take away his CC win, and this guy has nothing of note on his resume.

It was gone long before JDS. Gonzaga is pretty much the Sokoudjou of the HW division. He rode the wave of a huge KO over a highly regarded fighter and than just flat out sucked. It's not embarrasing like Sokoudjou but the aberration and the fall to reality is similar.

Good cut. Big Tim vs. Gonzaga. Book it.

Gabe will be a nice pick up for SF.

Gonzaga can be used just like he was in the UFC. To pump the name up of other fighters to casual fans.

They could use him like that. Put him in against Del Rosario and we'll just watch him get tooled by a younger, faster fighter again

Exactly, or maybe Johnson. I know it isn't possible because of the timing but I think a Johnson vs Gonzaga matchup would really help this Hendo-Babalu card.
