Ranking any combination of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese is largely bogus because with the exception of ethnic minorities, cultural things like using too much makeup (Korea and Japan), and clothing style there is no visible difference. I laugh when my friends claim they "can tell the difference" between Chinese, Korean, and Japanese people just by looking at them because it's akin to saying you can tell the difference between an American and Canadian just by appearance. Even the honest Asian folk admit that beyond cultural influences and stereotypes there are no visible difference. Korea and Japan were both part of China at one point and other than a darker complexion for folks in the southern most part of China there isn't anything geographically that would have changed the appearance of the people since that time. There also has and continues to be a gigantic amount of emigration and immigration between the three. Where does Akiyama look like he's from? He's a dead ringer for the security guard in my apartment building in China.

I think to some extent, not in all situations obviously, I think you can tell the difference in where Asians are from. Back in high school I got pretty good at it, especially with Japanese and Korean. Now that doesn't work with everyone, but overall there is a difference and in many cases you can guess where they are from.

I don't mean the "no idea what you're talking about" thing as a personal insult either. Most people are in the same boat and for good reason.

There's a porn site - and I'm not going to look it up with my wife here sitting beside me - called something like Beijing Beavers or Beijing Bangers or something like that, and all the girls on that site are really freaking ugly. They would easily all be bottom 10% in China. Upon investigation however, virtually none of them are actually Chinese. Porn is illegal in China. They don't make porn in China. People get the death penalty for being arrested with a joint in China so porn probably carries a life sentence haha. What we get as "Chinese" is usually actually the ugly Korean/Japanese girls that the porn/model industries and even to some extent Hollywood don't want tainting the perfectly cutesy Japanese girl stereotype they have going on in the western world.

I've been to all three countries. China wins for number of hot chicks because they have eleventy four times the population of South Korea and Japan combined, but on a per capita basis, so long as you stay out of the villages (in any of the three but especially China which has a much larger percentage of people being rural) they very much are equal.

The "no difference" thing isn't me trying to look smart, it's really how it is. When you actually go to the countries and see the real people rather than base things on Westernized Asians or what we are given to look at from wild crazy and very modern Japan, modern but conservative Korea, and ultra-conservative and largely still isolated China, it's easier to understand. Don't get me wrong, I'm fully confident you could throw up a few pictures here and people could accurately guess where the people were from, but they would be based on stereotypes.

Three years ago I would have agreed with you completely.

One of my good friends who didn't move to the US until 9th grade use to crack me up. He use to tell me there is a huge difference between what North and South Koreans looked like, he would said "they are skinny bitches" ooooh how he hated those North Koreans lol
He also hated Japanese and if you called him Japanese, it was on.

That's tough to answer.

Japan is the most modern but is crazy expensive and people are a bit ethnocentric for me.

SK is ok but the people seem to really dislike foreigners living there and especially foreign guys being anywhere near their young female population.

In China I lived in a big city of 8 million people but still had power outages every other day and seeing kids in assless pants pooping on the street was way too common of a sight. The people were by far the most interesting in China because they're so sheltered. One time I seen a big (maybe 6'6" 300 pounds) black dude who looked to be straight out of Africa walking down the street and the Chinese people literally ran away when they seen him coming. It was like Godzilla was rolling down the streets of Tokyo. When I had H1N1 and a temperature of 104F+ the Chinese doctor gave me a shot in my ass and some herbal tea, neither of which did anything but luckily I had taken a bunch of tylenol and ibuprofen with me to help with the fever. When I had a sinus and ear infection they just told me that my ears were dirty and that I was fat and needed to do more exercise.

For short term living (a few years or less) I'd choose China. Long term I would have to go with Japan if only to avoid death via crackpot doctor in the event that I ever got seriously ill in China.
