Judoka's in MMA

I was reading this story about this olympic Judoka and can't help but wonder if there is ever going to be another badass Judoka in our sport. Someone like Karo WAS. Someone who actually used their Judo as a weapon the way Karo did instead of using it for TD defense like most fighters have. I feel like Judo is one of those highly underrated skills that could be a deference in alot of fighters games. How do you feel about Judo? Do you agree?

Yoshiyuki Yoshida is a 4th degree black belt in judo but rarely used it in his UFC fights as i remember

this guy has a past in judo

Yoshihiro Akiyama is a world class Judoka. Demian Maia has an extensive training in Judo as do most of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu studs. Believe it or not Judo is bigger in Brazil than Jiu Jitsu is even to this day.

There are a lot of Judokas in MMA. It's hard though to fight with Judo as your primary style. Most Judokas have inferior greco wrestling and inferior BJJ.

Hector Lombard is a world class Judoka. Top five FW Manny Gamburyian is a Judoka. Top five FW Michihiro Omigawa is a Judoka. There are many others.

Usually the best Judo MMA fighters are severe athletes who can adapt to MMA. Judo in itself isn't a great style for MMA imo.

Judo good. Ludo bad.

Yeah I know about the many Judokas in mma I was talking about guys that use it alot more like Karo did.

Karo would throw a dude once or twice every match or two.

Bellator WW, Rick Hawn. See his promotional debut for one of the great Judo throws in MMA history.

regardless of his other shortcomings Soku does use his Judo well.

Most Judokas find it hard to hit their throws without a gi or clothing. That is what made Karo so special at the time...he could actually judo throw people without a gi or clothing. Wrestling has an advantage over Judo in mma because of the required uniform. Wrestlers are used to hitting throws and takedowns with the opponent wearing a singlet and are not allowed to grab the singlet. If mma were fought in clothes, you'd see judokas be more successful imo.

I know of a San Shou guy who uses a few throws when he fights. He likes to kick alot and break bones with his feet.

(obligatory pee on the parade post that says a bronze judo medalist waltzing into the sport and smashing the number 3 p4p fighter with a year of experience just proves wmma is in the stone age vs mens MMA)

pretty much true. Ronda's judo is 2012 womens MMA = Royce Gracie BJJ in mid 90's mens MMA. In 10 years people will be talking about how overrated Ronda was and how easily new breed womens fighter Madelyn Hughes destroyed her.

I had a similar conversation in another forum not long ago. Womens MMA truly hasn't evolved yet to the point where fighters are starting to put it all together seamlessly. What you really have are wrestlers who can strike enough to set up the takedown but not much else, strikers who can sprawl and brawl, and the occasional rangey submission savant.

WMMA will never be quite like mens MMA, athletically speaking, so it will always have I think a bit more of the classic style vs style feel.
