The cold spells are related to global warning as well. The warm Arctic changes northern wind patterns and that allows the frequent, prolonged cold spells in North America and Europe. Moisture is picked up, and we get snow accumulations like we did. Which are then followed by odd warm periods.

Well it rained today here in my area for the first time in over 9 weeks. 6 inches of snow at the local mountain. It's been basically spring here since mid-fall. The level of drought from last year was bad, at this time last year snow pack was at about 55% of normal, which is kind of the normal now. Today the snow pack in the Sierra Nevada mountains is closer to 6% of normal. This will be bad for California's near-term agricultural economic vitality, very bad.
